Lawmaker Echoes Call For State to Guarantee Electricity Supply
(ALIEF) Texas State Representative Hubert Vo said the state’s Public Utility Commission should act immediately to protect Texans from having their electricity disconnected for any reason during the rest of the summer, when temperatures are hitting record highs and soaring utility costs are making it difficult for increasing numbers of elderly, low-income, and medically vulnerable citizens to pay their bills.
“A moratorium will save lives and buy time for families to make financial arrangements when the weather is cooler and their safety is no longer on the line,” Vo said. |

|
(ALIEF) - On a day that marks the official start of the 2006 hurricane season, State Representative Hubert Vo today called on state officials to immediately reject rate hike requests filed this week with the Texas Department of Insurance by the state's largest home insurer.
"Texas homeowners already pay twice the national average to protect their homes," Vo said. "The state should be demanding that Big Insurance lower its rates, not granting permission to raise them even more."

VO: ALIEF SCHOOLS HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ONE PENNY OF PROMISED DISASTER RELIEF
State Rep Says Schools Dealing With 3,000 Children of Hurricane Evacuees |
|
(ALIEF) - State Representative Hubert Vo today said local public schools have yet to receive a single penny of the more than $18 million in disaster relief funds originally promised to help accommodate 3,000 homeless students who started classes in Alief classrooms in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
"It is unfair to expect our schools to provide an adequate education to these newcomers when our local taxpayers are already stretched to the limit and public education dollars are scarce," Vo wrote this weekend in a letter to Texas Education Commissioner Shirley Neeley. (see attached)
Vo said local school and community officials are increasingly frustrated by the slow pace of the federal bureaucracy in authorizing the funds and an apparent scheme by state leaders in Austin to retain up to half of the potential aid for schools like Alief if it ever does arrive.

Secretary of State complains over lack of continuous count |
|
(HOUSTON) A spokesman for Harris County's elections administrations office says the decision to postpone the count of absentee ballots in the House District 149 race has not been influenced by the Secretary of State's office.
Public information officer David Beirne said the count had been delayed because the two candidates, Rep. Talmadge Heflin (R-Houston) and Democratic challenger Hubert Vo, were not in agreement over today's count.
The count will now take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday and will be expanded to include all mail-in, provisional and military ballots from across the county. The ballot board was due to review only 130 mail-in and 181 provisional ballots in HD 149 at today's meeting.
